Just watching the conclusion of the 1990 QF game in Italy.

My God we were lucky to beat them and scrape through.

Gazza and Jug ears aside, we were pretty average.

I was at that game and I remember thinking it would be an absolute doddle, a real gimme.
(Bit like my thinking when we played Iceland in the Euros)

Brilliant game and a real nailbiter by the end

My immediate quote after watching on TV at home with mates was.. "more jammy than Hartleys".

I did enjoy watching the re-run but where have those 30 years gone?

Roger Milla. Legend. Officially was 37 but remember people saying you could add a few years onto that.

We were lucky but that Cameroon team was phenomenal. The Indomitable Lions they were.

The nearly tournamnent.

Having said that we did only really play well in one game and actually ultimately lost that game. Our three group matches were dull affaires with uninsiring draws against the Irish and the Dutch followed by a narrow 1-0 against Egypt. David Platts last gasp winner against Belgium glosses over what was another fairly dull if pretty tense game. Yes we were very lucky against Cameroon and then came the semi final against Germany in which to many people we were the better side and and were very unlucky. Pesonally I thought we performed much better in Spain in 82.

I was on a break in Dublin for the the Cameroon game, it was played at the very time the Irish team arrived home and were doing a parade of Dublin. I was in a hotel room drinking half a bottle of Whiskey (Irish version, when in Rome and all that) and I watched the England game, curtains pulled shut oblivious to "celebrations" outside and their team bus passed our very hotel.

Chesh,
As the team bus passed by, you should have leaned out of your window and called down to all the Englishmen on it, inviting them up to watch the game! 😆

Darlington won 4-0

England Cameroon won 3-2

England Argentina 1998 lost on pens Beckham sent off

Yeovil game at Wembley won 2-1

Cameroon were a very strong outfit, already beaten Argentina and Columbia if I remember rightly. So no surprise we had our hands full. I think they'd have made the final from the other side of the draw.

From memory we had a pretty tough draw, faced the European and African champions in the group stage. A strong Belgium side and then beaten by the eventual winners.

Shows how fortunate a run we had in 2018.

I was at that David Beckham Argentina game too TTP. Some night that was. Just misses out on my top 5 games though, I'd go with

Hibs 3 Rangers 2 winning the Scottish cup for the first time in 114 years, the most emotional match I have ever witnessed.

Blackpool 3 Cardiff 2 Play off final

Forest 3 Blackpool 4 Play off game

Liverpool 1 Blackpool 2 Premier League

Germany 1 England 5

Was it Alex Ferguson that once said "football, XXXXXX hell" ? when you look back on our faourite games it makes all those cold winter nights watching turgid shyte fully worthwhile for those few fleeting moments of sheer joy and exctasy.
