Bit of a gamble this

Obviously i wish the new head coach well but i cant really understand the thinking

First off 'head coach' worries the life out of me as it means the CEO will have a massive influence on signings, style of play etc

League 1 is a bit different to under 23s football, more pressure different styles of play etc and the fact that he's been working with some of the best young players in the world at top class facilities will be a massive culture shock when he gets to us working with some of our players

I also dont understand why we would rule out Evo yet give the job to this coach

Anyway hope he does well and our CEO leaves him alone

Time will tell ..

Sadler, and Mansford because it's the owner's vision, want to develop the academy.
Of course we will never be able to compete with Liverpool. Nobody is naive enough to think so.
Our ambition should be to catch up with Fleetwood, for starters, Plucky Little Wigan (who have a good academy) and other Championship clubs.
Whilst that won't be primarily Critchley's job I'll bet he'll be a more closely involved tha nour last few Managers have been.
And with his pedigree and a new training ground we will start to attract good young kids.
So I think Critchley is a chance worth taking.
This is of course a standard OG gambit in his o/p. Post somthing directly contra to the general consensus. [;)]

OG. Critchley has a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season. (3+ years)
It won't take that long to build a training ground.
A contract of that length (and the length of the contract did surprise me) shows that Sadler is building for the future and you are right these things don't happen overnight.
The future is a damn site brighter though than it has been for a long time.

I think the OP is fair enough. It clearly is a gamble. And not all gambles are equal. Like Tikataka says, he's been recruited from one job to a different job. He's a very useful person to have on the staff, for his coaching knowledge and his contacts, but we don't know if he will be able to manage first team players in League One, in competitive matches, and cope with the pressure and the personalities. It's not developing elite youngsters, who are desperate to succeed at a top club, and who play games that get little attention and carry little importance. He will be glad of David Dunn's presence, I think.

But Dunn seems like a quiet, undemonstrative guy too. How about an Evatt/Critchley dream team?

Some gambles work others don't. There's an element of risk in any appointment, but more risk with some than others. Pilley has gone for Barton because of his playing career experience and his highly competitive nature, his personality. Mansford has gone for Critchley because of his coaching background. He has zero playing or managing experience, so the risk is considerable. Footballers need coaching but they also need managing, motivating snd disciplining. We dont know how NC will get on, it could go either way. So the OP is right it's a gamble, more so than if we'd appointed a manager with some relevant experience, like Wellens or Robinson. Why did we go for them snd then make s completely different kind of appointment? It suggests there wasn't a strategy at all.

fcblackpool Posted on 04/03/2020 09:20

Whilst all managers are gamble's you try to reduce the gamble as much as you can. In NC's case that means having an exp No 2 (GET THOMMO!) and someone above him who can be a bit of a mentor as well as balancing the finance v football clash.

You've got to give the gamble as much help as possible.

This appointment is hardly a blind "pin the tail on the donkey" selection as some on here allude to. Everyone in football talks to each other. In this case, the club will have taken up references and soundings of people who know NC. Because it's the most important appointment the club has to make.

If you get Jurgen Klopp saying "I really don't want to lose Neil, but this is a good opportunity for him and he is a very good coach and man-manager", do you really think that is a blind gamble? And NC has worked for Klopp for more than 4 years.

Insy, worked well with Grayson that.

Point is a HC/manager isn't/shouldn't be a stand alone appt. This seems to be. Therefore the level of gamble, if you will, is higher than needed.

And c'mon Archie what is Klopp going to say ' Actually, I was going to get rid of him at the end of the season as we need freshening up'?.

My concern is that NC and DD have no real experience between them of the job of managing a group of senior professional footballers and dealing with the pressure of getting results. Critchley will bring a lot of coaching knowledge with him, but surely it makes sense to partner him with somebody with experience of taking a team into meaningful matches and getting results? Perhaps they will see how it goes with Dunn and review at the end of the season.

Grayson was old school and looking back over his period in charge I'd guess there were a number of conflicts. IMO his team selections support that.
Critchley is a "virgin" [:I].
It looks like he's bought into Sadler's model so he knows he's the coach in the management team. That doesn't mean he won't have a say in player recruitment but he probably won't negotiate their wages.
The team as whole though will have to work within Simon Sadler's budget.
Of course I accept that future success under this model is by no means a given but I'm sure that there will be an improvemnt on the field over and above the previous manager's effort.

I don't know what this model is, and I doubt NC , nor SS does in truth.

How can this be a model when the offered the 'managers' job to Heck and Jones?

How can it be a model if the asst. is an 'Dunn's here, so work with him' continuation.

Seems beyond bizarre to me, and totally unsustainable.

NC should have been part of a trilogy of hirings. It seems he is one of one.

Insy, Mansford is about as close as we'll get to a football person in the boardroom. SS will trust him- he has no bleedin' choice as it stands. And you have to remember as much as SS comes over and as much as he facetimes, he won't have a full on grasp of everything going on at BR. By that I don't mean the coffee and custard cream bill, he'll be all over those, I mean the day to day interactions between staff. I think that adds up to Mansford having a FULL ON role in all aspects.

I just wish and hope that another football person is brought in, other than TJ (see poolfc's analysis).

Sadler has built a very successful business around trusting the right people and I'm pretty damn sure those people will have had to work hard to earn Simon's trust. Those that let him down will have been moved on.
Mansford's position will be no different.
IP: Logged
fcblackpool Posted on 05/03/2020 13:59

Sure. Big difference is that SS knows his business inside out and knows exactly what he can reasonably get from those he trusts. However, he is new to football (he said so himself, I think) so cannot have the same level of understanding ergo Mansford becomes more important.

This is getting away from the point.

L1 is a world of difference to the U23. Not in quality, maybe, but the desire to win and how to attain that. NC needs more help than a former agent.

As said above, he doesn't have a record let alone proven.

It looks like a desperate appointment to me

Got turned down by several others then give the job to a guy from a youth team

Agree about the lack of a backroom team as well

Any manager worth his salt would bring in his own people

I agree. It seems that they didn't really know what direction to take. On the one hand they were going for exp. managers and on the other for U23 type's.

It hasn't been thought through imo.

Been away for a week and was straight back for the game last night. Was surprised to see that it's only Critchley that's come in and he hasn't brought a staff in with him. Either doesn't know anybody else or wasn't allowed to. That's a worry.

You hope it works out, and was important to at least use the rest of the season to have a look at it all with a permanent appointment in place rather than start over again in the summer, but it is a concern.

Basically being subsidised by two young lads on loan in midfield who are capable of having a shot, with or without Dunn or Critchley at the moment so it's masking a few things. It did look disorganised last night at times, but I put that down to desperation at trying to get back into the game having been immediately sussed out by a Tranmere team who switched to the 3-5-2 and played it better than Blackpool in every position.

It's a big job and it shouldn't be underestimated but it feels like it could end up being to me by Mansford who seems to have appointed himself as the all-seeing eye.

There ain't half some knowledgeable posters on here that come to some pretty conclusive conclusions on the basis of 2 games.
Process, process, process is the mantra of the highly successful businessman that owns Blackpool FC.
Maybe out new Manager is doing just that in ths honeymoon period until the end of the season.
It's possibly a lesson for some on here?

Agree with you to an extent. Although u23's maybe on big money, look at the last star they sent us,lasted 10 mins and then faded into oblivion. Like most at that age. Chant - keep your nose out CEO.

It's not U23s as individual players, it's the environment as a whole. Shaun Harvey thought he could make a few quid from offering up the LDV Vans Trophy to Prem clubs to give their youth something competitive to take part in. And to a point it's how Dewsbury-Hall has come on the radar -he's already scored against Sunderland this season, which will probably get a mention later this week.

So no problem with borrowing players on loan and putting them in a team with other experienced lower league players, but I'm not so sure about sourcing an U23 coach to take charge of a full squad and telling him to work with other inexperienced coaches that he doesn't really know. It appeared only a few weeks before that Mansford thought he had Nathan Jones with Paul Hart as his trusted assistant in the bag when they sacked Grayson and it'd be fairly seamless, so the approach hasn't been consistent and has changed somewhere along the line with the more names that have popped up, and that's the key to all this for me and why I can see there being more incomings on the staff as 'help' at some point.

Where I will agree with you Phil is that I don’t think this was some grand master plan rather a fallback position after the original targets were lost to BFC

Where i differ from you is that I think we’ve got to buy into what SS is seeking to achieve and support NC and see where it takes us

Harking back to the ‘ halcyon days ‘ of Simon Grayson doesn’t do your argument any favours

Agreed OG in fact they were saying the same about him after the Huddersfield job,but he took the Nobbers to the next level.

Lots of things have to align and luck plays a part, but not for Larry this time round
