I'm currently in Istanbul, staying in a large seafront hotel on the Asian side, near the Port of Tuzla.

As you probably know, 33 Turkish soldiers have just been killed by Russian backed Syrian forces.

Tonight, several hundred cars with Turkish flags congregated on a huge car park directly in front of our hotel. Lots of loud music, chanting and even the Last Post was played.

They have all now departed in a massive convoy along the promenade complete with Police escort.

Very impressive and quite moving.

What's going on in at the border between Syria and Turkey is outrageous. One atrocity after another while the UN stands by and Turkey seemingly left to it.

It's a very sad an convoluted situation in Syria.

Assad is always made the villain in the West but the carving up of Syria is absurd.

All I know is that 33 Turkish soldiers shouldn't be killed - but the poor people of Syria are the most preyed on - via multiple fronts than any other in the world God bless them.

A country that was only a few decades ago wealthy and a playground for the rich. They are educated and brilliant people - yet they escape in fear to the west to be treated like dogs. [|)]

Fair point Roadchef, Turkey is not without blame in this and they have closed their borders. What a mess.

Unfortunately Syria's original small scale civil unrest with Assad's police rounding up dissenters that turned into a civil war, created the groundwork for a number of other countries along with ISIS to take advantage of the situation.
Russia backing Assad in return for using the facilities in Tartus for it's Mediterranean operations, Iran and Hezbollah from Lebanon in maintaining influence across the region and Turkey in it's long drawn out conflict with the Kurds.
NATO along with others in it's war against ISIS and there you have it, not much hope for the suffering civilian population, millions now displaced in refugee camps in Jordan, Turkey, Greece as well as those trudging from one country to another in the hope of finding a peaceful outcome.
NATO now has a dilemma over Turkey, being a member state the last thing NATO would want is to find itself drawn into a conflict if God forbid Turkey decides to take on the Syrians and their close allies the Russian military.
Strangely in the past year or so Turkey has become close to Russia something that has worried NATO, a new defence system purchased from Russia and a more aggressive approach towards the US.
In a nutshell Syria has become the battleground for many parties, the poor people of Syria have suffered enormously and there was me believing the UN was set up after WW2 to stop major powers from engaging in conflicts.
We appear to have learnt little from history.

This is the final countdown in Syria regaining control of it's borders.

ISIS and similar over last number of years have been pushed and even transported into Idlib region.

Turkish observation points are amidst rebel held areas and unfortunately these casualties were always going to happen with Syrian army offensive.

Turkey possibly supports some of the rebels.

Hopefully diplomacy will settle things down.
