So far, So good

There still seems something strange about supporting a normal club. In many ways, the whole time I have supported Blackpool. I have never really known what supporting a normal club has been like. The previous owners made sure a crisis was never far round the corner and, although Not a Penny More only started towards the end of their reign, there was always simmering resentment towards the previous custodians of the club. These last few weeks, watching the events at Bolton and Bury, have reinforced what a fortunate position Blackpool fans now find themselves in. However, we all worked hard and made sacrifices for the rewards we're now reaping and the start of this season is testament to that. Unlike in previous seasons, there is a real belief that this can and will continue.

We'll never know what another season under Terry McPhillips would have meant for the 'Pool but his decision to step down gave the fans that clean slate that many wanted. The previous managers summer signings had been hit and miss - Jamie Devitt and Ben Tollitt's departures last week came as little surprise and you would expect Adi Yussuf to go the same way. However, there is no doubt that Terry had an eye for a decent player, proven by some of the acquisitions of the previous 12 months, and the signatures of Sullay Kaikai and Ryan Edwards seem shrewd moves. However, the arrival of Simon Grayson has undoubtedly strengthened the side. He has brought in a nice mix of established players and emerging talent, and he seems to have got more out of the likes of Thompson, Feeney and Delfouenso who, by the end of last season, had all lost their way somewhat. There's been setbacks with Husband's sending off and Spearing and Delfouenso's injuries along with a ridiculous fixture schedule and the Macclesfield cup defeat, however you do feel this is a side that can achieve so much more as the season continues.

With clubs due to finish their business on Monday 2 September, there seems to be the suggestion that Simon's shopping list has yet to be complete. Callum McDonald from Derby is a left back who has been on his radar and he might fancy a further punt or two to bolster his numbers. There are a few concerns still around the squad. Are Joe Nuttall and Ryan Hardie enough to provide us with some extra goal power and do we have that midfielder who can do the job that a certain player who went to Reading would have been ideal for? The first five league games of the season always looked likely to give us a decent return and 11 points from 15 (with 3 of those games away from home) will have pleased the returning manager. This weekend's game against Portsmouth was always seen as the first 'real test' although Pompey have had a real stop/start August and have yet to hit any real form.

Whilst the home crowds have been impressive, it was the sight of over two thousand Blackpool fans at Spotland which was the real reminder of how far we've come in such a short space of time. Of course being a fan of a 'normal club' means there'll be disappointments and upset along the way but, in many ways, those emotions are just as much of a reminder about what this club means to us as the joy and jubilation. There's still some way to go before the table and the teams start to settle down (have always felt league standings are pretty irrelevant until the clocks go back) but thankfully for the two Simon's it's so far, so good.
