James Milner must be unsure of whether to dream about the World Cup or the Champions League after leaving Villa breathing down Spurs’ and Liverpool’s necks in the race for fourth place with a winner at Wigan.

Perhaps both are tournaments Milner can play a part in during the next few months after his second-half supershow clinched a vital win for Martin O’Neill’s men.

Republic of Ireland player James McCarthy scored an own goal to put Villa ahead but that was cancelled out by Gary Caldwell.

Milner fired home the winner in the 63rd minute to lift O'Neill's men within three points of fourth-placed Tottenham, with a game in hand.

The victory was O'Neill's first in the league in the month of March since taking charge at Villa.
