Villa manager Martin O'Neill believes Gabby Agbonlahor will boost the bid for Europe by returning against Stoke after struggling with a virus.

The striker had to sit out the FA Cup quarter-final victory over Reading after being struck down by the bug on the day of the game but O'Neill says he is on course to recover in time for weekend.

Agbonlahor may not walk straight back into the side – John Carew scored a hat-trick at Reading after taking his place in the side.

O’Neill said: ‘He was pretty ill on Sunday. That was a real disappointment but fate sometimes is in other people's hands. As it turns out it was John Carew's feet.

‘Gabby missed training again on Monday but we are hoping it is just one of those 48 to 72 hour viruses.’

Stoke warmed up for the clash with a 1-1 draw at Burnley on Wednesday night.
