Paul McGrath has expressed his sympathy for Villa over the decision which could have cost them the Carling Cup final.

The ex-Villa and United legend said Nemanja Vidic should have been sent off for the foul which led to the penalty from which James Milner put MON’s men ahead. And McGrath said Vidic’s reprieve and the effect it had on the result must have hurt the manager.

McGrath told ‘I genuinely think he was so lucky to stay on the pitch. It was only four minutes into the game but Phil Dowd made a major decision there.

‘But I still think when you bring someone down like that and you’re the last man you probably deserve a red card if the letter of the law is applied. I saw Martin O’Neill’s reaction and he was right, but for Vidic not to get a card at all was amazing.

‘It will hurt Martin because if that decision had have been a red card so early in the game they could have been so much more in control of the match.

‘I hate criticising referees because it’s such a difficult job but you have to give the player at least a yellow card and probably send him off.

‘I thought in the first half Villa took the game to Manchester United but when they scored so early United had a lot a lot of time to get back into the game and then you look over and see someone like Wayne Rooney is on the bench waiting to come on.’
