Stewart Downing showed the perfect to make up for the time he lost to injury in the first half of the season – by scoring twice in two minutes as Villa came from behind to sweep aside Burnley at Villa Park.

He got two in a blinding Villa spell of four goals in 13 minutes as MON’s men showed their superior quality to move within a point of fourth-placed – helped by Liverpool’s tepid 0-0 draw at Manchester City.

Steve Fletcher opened the scoring for Burnley when Jack Cork, making his first start, combined with David Nugent to set him up for a tap-in.

In the 32nd minute, Villa were level. A short corner by Ashley Young went to James Milner and a return pass resulted in a shot which went through the legs of Tyrone Mears and past Brian Jensen, who seemed to be wrongfooted by a slight deflection.

Early in the second half, Villa wrapped up the points with a devastating spell of football.

First Emile Heskey and Gabby Agbonlahor played in Young, who squared it to Downing, and he fizzed a low past across the keeper and in at the far post.

Downing celebrated his first Premier League goal for Villa with his second two minutes later. He picked up a Milner pass, turned and shot past Jensen.

Villa added a fourth when Heskey converted a left-wing cross from Agbonlahor in the 61st minute.

Eight minutes later, Milner carved open the defence for Agbonlahor to hit the fifth.

Martin Paterson notched an 88th minute consolation goal for Burnley, who had showed in the second half why they have the worst away record in the division.
