Richard Dunne has been hailed as Villa’s man of the moment after another heroic display helped his team earn a valuable point at Spurs.

Not for the first time this season, Dunne was the inspiration behind a clean sheet against one of Villa’s rivals in the top seven. Now Martin O’Neill and Dunne’s team-mate Kule Young have led the chorus of praise.

O’Neill said: ‘I thought Dunne in particular was absolutely brilliant. He can read the game, he is very, very brave and when he is going to head it you just get out of the way.

‘I think Richard had a really fine career at Manchester City - I don’t think you can be at a football club for nine years and not have a real affection for it, so maybe we were lucky to get him.

‘If Manchester City had really wanted to keep him, perhaps maybe he might even have stayed – I just don’t know. What I do know is, whatever way it fell for us, I’m just delighted to have him.’

Young added: ‘The ball drops in the box and nine times out of 10 Dunney blocks it. He has been fantastic in pretty much every game he’s played.

‘He’s an old-fashioned centre-half, he’s like a magnet – a bit like Martin Laursen when he used to play. Everything seems to land to him.’
