Martin O’Neill cast an envious glance in the direction of Tottenham’s squad before taking his troops to White Hart Lane.

Villa didn’t do half the business Harry Redknapp managed during the transfer window and O’Neill has hinted he’s a little envious of the riches at his opposite number’s disposal.

O’Neill relfected on Spurs’ decision to let Robbie Keane go to Celtic and said: ‘I think that probably tells you everything.

‘Their manager Harry Redknapp seemed happy enough for Robbie to go out – because he has got Gudjohnsen, Pavlyuchenko, Defoe and Crouch. He has built up a really squad and well done to them.

‘Gudjohnsen is a really excellent signing for them. They’ve obviously moved in for Kaboul as well, just in case they moved in for any defenders. They have put a really great squad together and are really going for it.’

James Milner, Ashley Young, Stewart Downing and Luke Young, meanwhile, have won praise for proving versatile to Villa this season.

O’Neill said: ‘The versatility thing is quite important,. What we have had is Ashley Young going from right to left, Downing switches over now and, while Milner is now more central midfield, you will still see him popping up on the right or left-hand side or midfield.

‘It’s that versatility that I think has helped us enormously in the last few months.’
