Martin O’Neill has gambled on his strikers staying fit for the rest of the season and declined to add new blood to the forward line in the transfer window.

But deadline day passed peacefully for Villa, with the main move involving the club seeing Nicky Shorey go on loan to Fulham.

Now O’Neill must hope Gabby Agbonlahor, Emile Heskey and John Carew remain available to him as the team battle for two cups and go for that prized fourth-place finish in the league.

His squad has had a boost on deadline day – the return from injury of defenders Curtis Davies and Wilfred Bouma in the reserves’ impressive 3-1 win over Chelsea.
