Gabriel Agbonlahor was the toast of Villa after his double secured their first league win of 2010 at Fulham – and ended their over-hyped goal drought at the same time.

The 2-0 win at Craven Cottage put Villa right back in the hunt for fourth place – they are now just two points behind Spurs, who hold that spot at the moment – and ends a run of four league matches without a goal or a win.

Martin O'Neill praised Agbonlahor after he headed the opening goal in the 40th minute and added a second on the stroke of half time.

He told Sky: ‘If you'd had a chance to see him playing on Wednesday night, I thought he was absolutely fantastic against a top class defence in the Arsenal game.

‘I thought he got the merits today. He scored the goals, I thought he took them magnificently - the second goal was just absolute class. He has actually been fantastic for us, really fantastic. He's a centre forward, I think that he feels himself now that his overall game has improved immensely.

‘The ability to hold the ball up, the ability to go beyond players and today his goals will give him that extra boost of confidence because whatever you say about it, strikers do like to score goals.’

The only worry for Villa is there is a new team emerging as a threat in that fourth-placed race, a little-known outfit called Liverpool who have suddenly started winning a few easy games.
