Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier doesn’t believe Villa will finish in the top four – nor win the Carling Cup.

The ex-Southampton player virtually wrote off the rest of Villa’s season after watching the 0-0 draw with Arsenal.

Le Tissier said their failure to score in four successive league games was not the sort of record that would get a side into the top four.

Asked if he thought they could finish in that group he replied ‘Probably not’. And asked if he thought they could win the Carling Cup, in which they will face Manchester Utd in the final following their 3-1 second-leg semi win over City, he repeated ‘Probably not’.

Martin O’Neill, not surprisingly, is taking a more upbeat view. He said the league goal drought would come to an end soon, and felt Villa’s overall play against Arsenal did not point to a team having a crisis.

In the time in which they have gone those four league games without a goal or win, Villa have scored 13 goals in two cup competitions.

In the stalemate at Villa Park, Cesc Fabregas struck the post in first-half stoppage time and Tomas Rosicky crashed a shot against the bar after the break.

Villa played their full part in a pulsating end-to-end affair and Stewart Downing spurned two opportunities to win it.
