Aston Villa have one foot at Wembley after James Milner scored the only goal of their Carling Cup seni-final first leg at Ewood Park.

Villa’s players and management may have been saying all the right things after wards about ‘the tie’s not over yet’ but the 5,000 Villans who were there and many more who watched on TV know it will take a disastrous second-leg for them to miss out.

Milner slotted in Stewart Downing’s cross after 23 minutes to hand Villa the lead at the halfway stage, ahead of next Wednesday’s Villa Park second leg.

They could have easily gone in at half-time further ahead – or added a second after the break.

Gabby Agbonlahor should have a penalty after a challenge by Christopher Samba inside the box after 40 minutes but referee Mark Clattenburg outrageously booked the Villa striker for diving.

There was another good penalty claim late on when Pascal Chimbonda appeared to handle inside the box, only for Clattenburg to again give the decision the other way.

For Rovers, Nikola Kalinic twice fired against the same post, but in the main Villa looked sound, and a similar show next Wendesday will secure their first trip to the new Wembley.
