The need to play their Carling Cup semi-final first leg before the pre-arranged date for the second leg leaves Villa with a fixture pile-up.

Martin O’Neill’s men now face seven games in 22 days in three different competitions – something only they and Manchester City will face as survivors in both domestic cup competitions.

Villa go to Wigan on Saturday and then Blackburn for that cup first leg game on Thursday next week, January 14. After that, West Ham visit Villa Park on Sunday, January 17.

They host Blackburn and Brighton in the cups on January 20 and 23 and then Arsenal visit Villa Park in the league on January 27. Villa end the month at Fulham.

Martin O’Neill won’t be over-impressed at that schedule and believes the depth of his squad will come into its own during the busiest period of what’s becoming a fairly gruelling season.
