Talk of a January move for Robbie Keane by Aston Villa – first mooted on this website some weeks ago – is gathering pace.

The Sunday Mercury’s Mat Kendrick says the Spurs striker would be the perfect buy for Martin O’Neill.

.

It comes as fresh reports suggest John Carew is the latest Villa forward Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is interested in.

Kendrick says: ‘It was a case of so close and yet so far when Villa attempted to sign the Irish striker during the Doug Ellis/John Gregory days. But now would be the perfect time to finally get Keano in claret and blue.

‘The Tottenham star would add the nous and guile that Villa are sometimes lacking around the penalty area. Keane has strong West Midlands links from his Wolves days, is close friends with compatriot Richard Dunne and is likely to be available following the Dublin Christmas party scandal and his lack of starts for the White Hart Lane club.

‘Whether Spurs would consider selling him to one of their top rivals is another matter entirely, however.’
