Martin O’Neill reckons Liverpool as much a part of the race for honours in this season’s Premier League as Villa – despite their below-par first half of the season.

The Villa boss says Arsenal showed last season how a so-called stuttering team could remain in the thick of the top-four race until the end of the season – and it would be wrong to think Liverpool’s season will necessarily fade. But he also wants his players’ focus to be firmly on their own performance, not Liverpool’s, ahead of the sides’ Villa Park tussle.

O’Neill told the Villa official website: ‘What we've got to do is we've got to fight back against Liverpool and try and win. Liverpool have lost a few games more than they would have thought.

’Last season they were terrific. They went through the whole season and lost two games and within three matches of this season they'd lost two games. So they've lost a few but they are getting a bit of momentum again.

’It was a big win for them at Anfield against Wolves. But we've got to try and be right ourselves.’

O'Neill says it is too soon to write off Liverpool, telling the website: ‘I heard Arsenal were imploding last season around about February time," he said.

’But if anybody had looked at what they'd achieved, I think they were in the midst of a 22 game unbeaten run.

’They ended up finishing very strongly in the season and contesting the Champions League semi-final as well.

’Liverpool are capable. They are capable because it is Liverpool Football Club, that is why.’
