Liverpool will be told ‘Hands off Heskey’ if they try to take the England striker back to Anfield in the transfer window.

The Reds need an experienced Premier League campaigner to rescue their season and Rafa Benitez is reported to be interested – but Martin O’Neill has already said he doesn’t want to see players leaving Villa Park in January, when he does not expect to make any big signings himself.

The Times says a combination of Heskey’s return to form and the determination of O’Neill not to do business with a Premier League rival is likely to scupper Liverpool’s hopes of taking the forward back to Anfield.

Benítez is keen to recruit an attacking player with a proven track record who is adept at holding up the ball and bringing others into play, qualities that Heskey has in abundance, the report says.

Heskey has kept John Carew out of the Villa starting line-up in recent weeks but Carew staked a claim for a start against Arsenal on Boxing Day with the winner against Stoke.
