Villa are back up to third place after their second away win in four days and second victory this season at the Stadium of Light.

A goal in eahch half by Emile Heskey and James Milner eased Martin O’Neill’s men to another terrific result – boosting hopes they can make a genuine challenge for a top-four place at the end of the season.

Heskey – a revelation since edging John Carew out odf the side - opened the scoring with a low shot and Milner sealed the win with a superb 25-yard shot on the hour.

Stewart Downing and Ashley Young also hit the woodwork, but Sunderland had their moments too.

Andy Reid twice went close for the Black Cats, but Lorik Cana's red card for a second booking summed up the hosts' evening.

Victory puts Villa within five points of Chelsea, who play Portsmouth on Wednesday night, and Manchester United, who beat Wolves.
