Milner set up the opener on 14 minutes, with a measured pass into Richard Dunne who was in yards of space. He took a touch before smashing the ball home.

Shortly before the half-hour mark Gabby Agbonlahor took a quick throw-in to release Milner as Hull keeper Duke desperately tried to recover after racing out of his goal to clear.

Milner showed sublime skill to lift the ball over the Hull defenders and into the unguarded net from just outside the area.

Stewart Downing went close to a third but the Villa fans had to wait until Carew put away a penalty.

Hull’s misery was increased by a serious-looking injury to Jimmy Bullard.

Villa will now hope Everton can defeat Spurs at Goodison on Sunday to furtther strengthen their position near the leading pack.
