Stewart Downing plans to do his bit to make sure his Villa league debut ends in victory over Hull City.

The Tigers head to the midlands on the back of an improved run of form but Villa start as strong favourites, knowing this is a must-win game if they’re to keep up their ambitions of pushing for a top-four finish.

Downing said: ‘We need to beat teams like Hull. No disrespect to them but we should beat teams like that at home if we want to get into the top bracket.

‘This is a big game for us. Hull are doing well but if we can keep playing the way we have in recent weeks, we have got a real chance.’

Downing is again likely to be one of three wingers in the side. Ashley Young and James Milner are also set to play, and Downing and Young will be asked to play in the centre at times, as Milner did on Tuesday at Portsmouth.

Downing added: ‘We have Ashley and James and we can all interlink and go in to different positions. The manager has stressed he wants us to go out and play well at home and entertain the fans. The Hull match gives us that opportunity.’
