Blackburn were seconds from winning the game in extra-time – they led 3-2 in the final minute – but Chelsea equalised.

In the penalty shootout, McCarthy, Emerton, Grella and Hoilett scored for Blackburn but Kalanic had his saved by Hilario, while for Chelsea, Drogba, Malouda and Zhirkov scored but Paul Robinson saved Ballack’s attempt and Kakuta’s final kick.

Villa will be pleased to have avoided Man Utd in the semis – Utd will play Man City, who beat Arsenal in their home quarter-final.

The semi-final first leg will be played on January 5 or 6, with the second leg at Villa Park on January 19 or 20.
