Why Heskey deserves applause for saying he'll leave Villa

I applaud Emile Heskey.

Yes I know that is strange for a Villa fan to be saying - but in his statement about needing to leave Villa Park, for once we have an honest player actually saying how he feels - with none of the PR stuff that surrounds most people in football.

‘I will have to sit down and think about my next move. I don't know whether I can get a World Cup place if I'm not playing for Villa,' he has said.

'I'm happy to be playing for England and, obviously, not playing at club level is difficult. It's something I will have to look at when I get back and try to address it.'

The problem for Heskey is that he must have known he was always going to be battling John Carew for a place – and, simply, Carew’s goalscoring record (and certainly not his effort) is far superior to Heskey’s so it makes an easy choice for MON.

Unlike the majority of my fellow fans, I understood the need for Heskey last January, when we were uncertain of Carew’s long term future, Gabby was showing signs of burn-out and there were few other forwards available.

Actually in many ways the signing was a no-brainer, but it became apparent Heskey provided little to the team that Gabby did anyway and then Carew became fit and started to score goals.

Heskey, in his mid-thirties, has to be playing more than a few minutes every week and he simply HAS to move on for his own career (whether MON lets him is another thing…).

But it does leave a gap in our squad strength up front and I see no easy answer to that in the month we have in January to fill the gap.

Is Heskey right to say he needs to leave Villa? Or should he just knuckle down and try to win his place in the Villa side? Give us your verdict on our forum. It's quick and easy to register
