Martin O’Neill says Ashley Young can become a better player for being ignored by England.

Young was left at home as Gabby Agbonlahor and James Milner flew with the England squad for the fruitless trip to Ukraine, with Milner playing the whole second half of the 1-0 defeat as a substitute for Steven Gerrard.

O’Neill accepts Young will be upset at his lack of chances in Fabio Capello’s squad but says it can benefit him long-term.

O’Neill said: ‘I think not being involved with England, although he might not see it like that at the moment, may actually do him a bit of good. It is a chance to recharge and have a proper break, which he hasn’t had yet. He has played a lot of games for us and he will come back fresh and raring to go again.

‘Whatever people might think he has still been doing splendidly for us and while not every single thing he has done has come to fruition it doesn’t matter, he is so important for us.

‘He’ll be disappointed at not making it into the England squad but there’s still plenty of time for him. The great thing about it is that it hasn’t stopped him from wanting to attack players.

‘He has to learn to take these knocks and if they’re not serious then you just get on with it.’
