An injury to Richard Dunne could disrupt club and country.

The central defender, who scored his first goal for the Villans against the club he used to skipper, Man City, last Monday, is struggling to be fit for Ireland’s game with Italy. And he could miss Villa’s clash at home to Chelsea nexrt week.

Martin O'Neill is sweating over the fitness of Dunne, who picked up the problems during Monday night's 1-1 draw with City.

He has been forced to sit out training as the Republic of Ireland prepare for the huge World Cup qualifier against Italy on Saturday night.

Despite struggling with the injury, Dunne is determined to face the Italians and looks certain to play through the pain barrier, news which is sure to concern Villa boss O'Neill.

‘He hasn't trained the last couple of days. I'm hoping that is precautionary and that he is available to play for Ireland,’ O'Neill said.

‘Richard was complaining of a sore ankle from a heavy challenge. He continued on in the game but he was a bit sore. He desperately wants to play against Italy. I just hope that he is OK.’

Dunne has formed an excellent defensive partnership with James Collins, and O’Neill won’t want to have to break that up when Chelsea visit.
