James Milner reckons Villa proved a point or two against Man City – but says the players were bitterly disappointed not to win the game.

As he joined up with the England squad for their two forthcoming internationals, Milner was still buzzing from having played in such an absorbing match between two of the Premier League’s two upward-looking sides.

Milner was delighted with the way Martin O’Neill’s side showed their attacking prowess while also underlining their defensive capabilities against City.

Milner, looking to add to his three England caps with appearances against Ukraine and Belarus, said: ‘It was end to end. It was hard – obviously they are a very good team. But I was delighted with the way we took the game to them.

‘They have had a good start to the season and we knew they’d come to us with all guns blazing. It was very much down to us to make sure we put on a performance – especially after the last game and that defeat to Blackburn.

‘It was good entertainment for the neutral against City but we were disappointed not to get the three points. We came out and had a good spell in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the second-half and had a couple of chances which could have made it two. If they go in it is a different ball game. Obviously they came back and got the goal and it was down to us not to crumble.

‘They were going to put us under a bit of pressure but we had chances at the other end as well. It was a good game from two attacking teams and two teams who are searching to improve and move forward as a club.’

With Milner in the England camp is Gabby Agbonlahor, called up in place of Jermain Defoe.
