Aston Villa have ‘moved on’ from the Gareth Barry saga, says MON.

But the Villa boss did admit he would rather still have the England man in his squad than in Manchester City’s when the sides meet on Monday.

O’Neill claims Villa have proved they are overcoming the departure of Barry.

Barry has helped Mark Hughes’s side into fifth place, with five wins out of six, but Villa would draw level on points with City if they triumph on Monday.

The Villa manager told The Time he was initially surprised when Barry opted not to pursue a move to a ‘big four’ club, when he was allowed to leave in the close season.

‘If you asked me would we still rather have him around here, then the answer would be ‘absolutely’,’ O’Neill said. ‘But he’s moved on to Manchester City now and I think we have made a shift ourselves.

‘As our team starts to take shape in the next couple of months, we are hoping his loss will not be as severe as we were certainly expecting early on.’

O’Neill empathises with Barry’s desire to find a fresh challenge.

‘I’m sure Gareth is pretty pleased with his decision and that’s obviously something I can empathise with in many aspects,’ he said. ‘I was with a club for ten years myself as a player. But it’s not just about Gareth.’
