Aston Villa look like missing out on Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart in the January sales.

Villa were one of a host of clubs linked with the star in the summer but he eventually stayed in Spain. Now he looks to be heading to France instead of England when the window opens again.

Lazio are favourites to seal the signing of van der Vaart in January, according to reports.

The Dutchman - who has made 33 league appearances for the Bernabeu outfit since arriving from Hamburg - appeared surplus to requirements this summer, following the club's purchase of Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema, Alvaro Arbeloa and Raul Albiol.

Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Everton and Aston Villa were all linked with moves for the midfielder.

Martin O’Neill is sure to strengthen again in mid-season but it looks like he will have to splash the cash elsewhere.
