Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov says the defeat at Blackburn hasdone nothing to dim the squad’s belief they can improve upon their two sixth-placed finishes.

The Bulgarian says there is a strong desire in the camp to bounce back from the reverseat Ewood Park, and he will take responsibility as captain in making sure it happens.

Petrov told the Villa website he is enjoying the responsibility of wearing the armband and leading the team.

He told AVTV: ‘I feel so much pride when I wear the armband. When you lead a club and team like Villa, it's just a great honour. It's a big responsibility.

’But I don't run away from that - I relish it and enjoy it. It's a good thing.

’The lads have been helping me too. You can have a fantastic captain but if the team don't perform, you don't stand a chance. Except for the Blackburn and Wigan defeats, we've done really, really well.

’They understand what the captaincy role means and they have been very supportive - they have been great to me.

’Sometimes you have to be vocal on the field and in the dressing room - the lads need encouragement from time to time - and that's my responsibility.

’It was frustrating at the weekend but in general what we have at the moment is a desire to win and a desire to put things right again. We'll bounce back.

’When you have that desire in the camp, you don't need to say much because I know we will do the business on the pitch.

’Progress is so important to us this season too. We have finished sixth twice and we hope to do even better this time around.’
