Martin O’Neill is challenging Aston Villa to put their poor recent Carling Cup record behind them when Cardiff visit for a third round tie on Wednesday night.

He will bring in a number of players for the game who have not been appearing in the Premier League – but says these will bnot be ‘peripheral’ squad members, for a game he clearly wants to win.

O’Neill said: 'We desperately want to win the game and we will go strongly.

We will make some changes to the side but the players who are coming in are not peripheral players - they are quality ones in our squad who have played a big part in getting results in the not-too-distant past.

The boss is wary of the ex-Villa players in the Bluebirds squad, Peter Enckelman, Peter Whittingham and Ricardo Scimeca.

'It will be difficult - primarily because our record in this competition at home over the past few seasons hasn't been very clever,’ O’Neill said.

‘We have gone out in consecutive years at the same stage when we would have been expecting to do much better.'

Emile Heskey is a fitness doubt but Nigel Reo-Coker could return less than a week after his training-ground fall-out with MON, while Fabian Delph could get a chance to impress from the word go.
