Emile Heskey aims to make the coming season a memorable one for him and Villa – starting against one of his old teams in the opening weekend.

Heskey knows competition for places up front in Martin O’Neill’s side will be hot this season – and with the boss predicting big things for John Carew this campaign, that’s arguably incrwased the pressure on the ex-Wigan England striker to deliver.

He believes he can do just that, and aims to get off on the right foot and help Villa erase the memory of the 0-0 draw Wigan nabbed at Villa Park last season to dent their hopes of a top-four finish.

Heskey said: ‘I don’t think the Villa supporters have seen the best of me. I’ve still got a lot to offer and they’ll see that. When I play my game I’m all about bringing in different players, holding the ball up and contributing that way.

‘With my experience, I should be helping with the younger lads and calming them down, because sometimes they can get a little bit frustrated. I’m happy here. I’m always happy when I’m playing football with a good team. The lads have taken to me since January and hopefully I can go from strength to strength.

‘I want to put all my injury troubles behind me and hopefully just concentrate on playing a full season.’

Heskey has praise for the way Wigan have established themselves in the Premier league and says they’ll never be a walkover for anyone.

The striker said: ‘Wigan will always be a tough team. I still speak to quite a few of the lads there – Mario Melchiot, Chris Kirkland, Mike Pollitt and Titus Bramble.

‘It was a difficult game last year. We had a lot of possession and should have won last season, but they defended bravely.’
