One of the surprise heroes of Villa’s Peace Cup win says the success has made him hungry for more.

But Marc Albrighton has admitted he hopes Martin O’Neill boosts his chances of an extended run in the first team … by not signing any more right-sided midfielders.

The 19-year-old was named most valuable player as Villa recovered from a slow start in Malaga to win the cup last weekend.

Albrighton said: ‘I just want to push on and hopefully I will get a chance in the Premier League. That is my aim this season.

‘If the gaffer chooses to play me then all well and good, if he doesn’t then I just have to keep my head down in training and within time I will get a chance.

‘Last season was a big step up for me. I wasn’t expecting that. Then to push on in pre-season. What happened in Spain, I want more of that.’

Albrighton admits he has mixed feelings about new signings as Villa close in on Fabian Delph from Leeds.

‘With the squad that we have, it is not the biggest but I think the gaffer is looking at a few players, and we will have a really good chance this season,’ he told the Birmingham Mail.

‘I don’t really want him to sign right midfielders if I am being honest. If he does I just have to get on with it and challenge for a place and give the gaffer a headache when he is selecting the squad.

‘I didn’t expect to play this much, I have had a bit of luck along the way. I have really enjoyed it and hopefully I have taken my chance and the gaffer is pleased with me.’
