A tournament that started badly ended with Villa in dreamland as they beat Juventus on penalties to lift the Peace Cup.

They held their nerve in the shootout better than the Italians after 120 goalless minutes in which they were more than a match for Juve.

The final, in Seville, wasn’t even a game Villa looked like reaching after losing to Malaga in their first game, but wins over Atlante and Porto put them through.

Neither side were able to make the breakthrough in normal time or extra-time, but Villa took the spoils by winning 4-3 on penalties against the Italian side.

Both sides missed twice in the initial five efforts of the shoot out, with the Juve duo Vincenzo Iaquinta and Alessandro Del Piero – who would have won the trophy for his side with a successful penalty – having poor shots saved by Brad Guzan, Steve Sidwell blazing over for Villa and Chris Herd being denied by Gianluigi Buffon.

But after Carlos Cuellar had confidently stroked home his side's sixth kick, Nicola Legrottaglie smashed his effort over the bar to give O'Neill's side the trophy.

Now it’s back to England for two more friendlies before the Premier League campaign begins – with Villa safe in the knowledge this will not be a season devoid of silverware.
