Martin O’Neill is looking to Stephen Warnock as a potential replacement for Nicky Shorey – and competition for Wilfred Bouma.

Villa believe the Blackburn defender could be the man to solve their left-back puzzle, which has arisen with Shorey struggling for form since his move from Reading and Bouma not yet over a long-term injury.

O'Neill will consider making a move for Warnock if Shorey leaves Villa, reports the Guardian.

Shorey has struggled to make an impact since joining 12 months ago and would appear to have no long-term future at the club.

Should Villa receive a suitable offer for the full-back, O'Neill may well decide to turn to Warnock, who would be expected to compete with Bouma for the left-back spot once the Dutchman has returned from an ankle injury that kept him out last season.

Warnock joined Blackburn from Liverpool for £1.5m in 2007 and has won one cap for England.
