Ashley Young has – hopefully – put a lid on stories linking with a move away from Villa Park by saying he has plenty more to achieve with the club.

Young is reportedly a £20m-plus target for Manchester United this summer and some Villa fans were worried Stewart Downing’s arrival to play on the left could signal the end of his spell at Villa Park.

But Young has moved to kill off speculation, insisting Villa’s ambitions match his own and that he wants to stay in the Midlands.

He said: ‘If you look at when I first came here, I set myself a lot of goals. I’ve achieved some of them – like getting in the England team, winning Player of the Month awards and being named the PFA Player of the Year.

‘There are still things that I want to achieve here. The club’s on a high – on the way up – and hopefully so am I, so I’m happy here.’

Meanwhile, Martin O’Neill admitted he was disappointed by Villa’s 1-0 Peace Cup loss at Malaga, but he was confident there was better to come from his players, who face Atlante in their second game, a must-win affair, on Wednesday.
