One ex-Villa boss may not be too impressed with Martin O’Neill’s achievements at Villa Park – but a former Villa captain thinks he is doing, and will continue to do a brilliant job.

Chris Nicholl’s glowing endorsement of the Northenr Irishman’s efforts with the Villa Park squad are in stark contrast to the views of David O’Leary, who says he has done no better than he did and with a much bigger budget.

Nicholl told the Villa website O'Neill would continue to push Villa into the upper reaches of the Premier League.

Nicholl says he is not surprised and said: ‘I am delighted Martin is here. I think he's doing brilliantly.

"The individuals are improving all the time - the likes of Stiliyan Petrov, Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor particularly. Look at Stiliyan - his improvement has been remarkable.

’Overall, we've improved under Martin - absolutely no question. It's been a gradual thing but that's the best way because it's a solid way.

’His staff are loyal and reliable and he relies on them too. But it all works. It's tried and tested.

’Every club has improved with Martin at the helm.

Villa have improved and it's come from Martin. He is a clever man - he improves people, he makes them want to play for him and he gets the best from.’
