What a remarkable season Rafiq is having and what a turnaround in his career. He will captain Yorkshire at Durham in the 20/20 tomorrow should Gale be unfit and the weather allow play. Rafiq will not just be the first Asian to captain Yorkshire but apparently the youngest ever Yorkshire skipper in competitive cricket. He is certainly noisy on the field as well as on twitter! Good luck to him.

A bit of a surprise, given his limited experience, although being England U. 19 captain shows he certainly has something. Very good luck to him if Gale is absent.

He has skippered the seconds this year so has clearly been lined up to get some experience for when the need arose.

Good luck to him. Age is immaterial and quick brain, confidence and decisiveness are what's needed

Good idea! I am beginning to think that being captain of a T20 side might just be a young man's occupation for the sort of reasons BPH quotes. IF there is a slightly older head or two around who the young skipper will look to when he needs a bit of support then I think he might do well.

At our club we had a really promising young cricketer, batter and bowler, and we elected him skipper of the second XI. The old lags took against him and as we all know there are ways that a player can booger up what the skipper wants them to do. "Sorry skiper" covers a multiude of sins.

After half a season of this the lad (after a lot oif soul searching) cleared off to another club and prospered with bat, ball and captaincy - and a year later lead a side of moderate players who won the league and absolutely stuffed us - twice!

Meaning which, donnylad, Rafiq needs the support of the older - and in some cases, capped - players.

I assume that can be taken for granted, otherwise they wouldn't have given him the job......

Anyway, an exciting development, and a welcome sign that YCCC can be innovative and flexible. There is much to be said for having a confident youngster, not yet scarred by failure.

That comes later!

at our club the same lad has captained my sons age group fromt he under 9s to the under 17s. Best player with bat and ball by a country mile but limited as a skipper.
This season a new coach took over the age group and rotated the captaincy so he could see who was best for the job. One lad who was only in the B team up to last year but has improved over the winter has taken to the captaincy like a duck to water (well that helps this season). He makes good decisions (sometimes an over or two later than I would have done but the correct decisions all the same), he involves everyone so there are no cliques and he respects the game. Its also made him a better player too.
Not sure what the previous captain thinks but as long as he bowls his overs and gets his 50 opening the innings then thats what the team needs him to do.

I think age is significant, because some experience is necessary with captaincy. I presume Rafiq will have the help and support of the more experienced players. Its a bold move, one which is exciting and fairly innovative for Yorks and, I presume, has a lot to do with Gillespie. Rafiq is uncapped, isn't he, unusual itself for a captain, albeit a temporary one.
I'm also trying to think how many other currect 'Asian' captains there are in England. Nasser Hussain was obviously one, but there haven't been too many I can think of.

Neil Hartley was uncapped when he led the side in the early 80s, but then he was dating the manager's daughter at the time.

Vikram Solanki may be of Asian descent too and has led Worcts several times.
