An email back from Rob at Fans on Line

Thanks for that everyone else saying so too. Still same server but something called cloud based hosting - over my head - but am told that when all fine tuning concluded it will be faster and more reliable. Have fedback what you have told me though as is very useful..Robert

The 'cloud' idea is how teckies try to make a picture of they way the service is hosted. Just think of the CoU (and other Fansonline services) being spread across a number of 'bases' rather than everything being on one large computer - the server.

The link below explains the advantages - don't be put off by the tech speak in the first part, look down the page and it does make sense.

Mind you I would like to know how long the fine tuning will take - it too 45 seconds to log on tonight. The idea is to prevent that sort of thing by using the increased processing power of the 'cloud'!

I wonder what alphanumeric code I'll get?

Later edit: I seem to have been excused numbers but perhaps we should identify ourselves when posting - at least for a while.
I struggle to identify/remember 4 figure passwords let alone 32 digit codes.

I don't want to sound like the Liverpool manager (or Kenny Whinger as he is know between me and my mate) but I am getting really teed off with the 'operation' of the site. It still drops off when posting or changing thread; it has just taken 3 minutes to log on and the time warp mentioned elsewhere is something else.

This is no criticism of 'our technical chap' but sithee 'ere I am reet vexed! I posted this at 21.53 but I am still behind the posting about the Leeds site. I feel as if I have been involved in an accident with a time machine.

Is there any likliehood that we will soon have a smoother service, soon?

Middlesex!!!!

In another existance we required remote back up of our day's business and the 'man/boy in hoodie and darkened room with keyboard' who masqueraded as out firm's IT guru fixed it all up for us.

The main server was in the cellar of a house in Cambridge and the back up server was in ........... San Diego. Thus when we were at work the tachies at the baqck up were asleep and vice versa - oh we had many merry japes sorting that out!!

On my PC the odd times seem to come and go. Today the times seem correct.
I'm randomly being denied access to posts, when I try to access them from the message list, but when I try again, straight away, I can access the required post ok.
I'm still not convinced the server thing isn't in the former historic county ( now north west Landin).

The time machine is still active but randomply - this at 11.59 and we shall se where in the aether - or more importantly when - it appears. My post on another thred has just disappeared.

I use several sites that are cloud hosted and they are NOT like this!!

It is not better, it is far worse.

I am currently having to log on each time I change thread. Where have the live links (blue and underlined words) come from? They are links to some marketing medium - is this the pay off for the re-hosting.

The site is still slow and clunky - far more than any other I use.

PS A worrying error message keeps appearing - Error 2 mySQL .......... server gone away.

Hmm - the message seems to be correct there then!

I'm still getting similar problems.
This is beyond a joke.
Surely the people who run the site should have competent technicians. If they don't they should sack the present lot, who seem clueless, and employ people who know what they are doing. We are wasting hours in total and might well lose contributors.

I don't want to speak too soon but I have been trying something to solve the double log on / post disappearing problems that Hawke and I have experienced.

In the log on window under the password and username boxes is a 'remember me on this computer box. Now I don't normally use that - even here at home and certainly not at work - but it is now 48 hours since I did it and all seems sunny.

I get straight to the site (no log on needed), I can post and hop from thread to thread without losing posts or dropping off.

It may be that some other black art has been applied elsewhen but it does seem to be the answer ........ at the moment.

Had my machine checked by IT guru who describes matters by using a favourite expression s*ite s*ite - you have one letter "h" and can replace either sterisk with it. The meaning is the same. It is nearly as good as our bowling.

Just to add that The Meet, the Leics site, are considering moving hosts. We cant continue like this for much longer especially if we become better known, such as via the Headingley scoreboard or the YCCC website. I have had one query following our appearance on the club website, its an interesting one that I will feature separately.

Very, very variable, connectivity is poor and site fails to respond about 50% of time. hence tiremsome logout and log in process again.

At one stage last night it ate 3 successive attempts to post a reply and finall the message 'Your post has been successfully suspended' appeared and the disappeared. Since the posts have not appeared I assume they are indedded suspended somewhere in the aether.

Today all is well - sort of - I still keep losing connection in mid post or when changing from one thread to another.

The good news - I seem to be able to edit messages (at other times) after I have posted them insted of merely as an update option at the time of posting.

It isn't a good as it was before switching to cloud based system.

EDIT Wednesday June 6th - tried to post - 'succesful' but nothing on the thred.

Can edit this message - will try update.

Oh yes I see 'user successfully suspended' came up again when I edited a posting and there is a misspelling of 'meesage' somewhere too. I will report this.

FD has told me - and I think he mentioned this before, sorry I get distracted - that he cannot access the articles, the column on the left hand side of the messages, the top one is overseas cricket tours. Does anyone else have this problem? Im fine but what about you?

I can't access them either. I get a load of stuff about 'access denied'.

I have received replies from Rob and Jez.

They are trying to narrow down the problem by asking questions.

Firstly dpressed are you using Internet Explorer to log on?

To everyone else try viewing the articles without logging in as a member just as a casual visitor. Then log in and see what happens, then log out and see what happens.

Thanks

My previous message on this thread may have been lost in a plethora of other postings. Please try Rob's suggestions posted yesterday by me and let me know what happens. I think there have been similar problems on at least one other site.
