Wolves slipped to a first pre-season defeat at the Madejski Stadium last night. Nenad Miljas was clearly keen to impress in his first appearance since returning from a break after World Cup exertions with Serbia, firing in the first attempt on goal from 25 yards out after taking on Kevin Foley's pass- home keeper Adam Federici proving equal to it.

But on the ten minute mark a mistake by Richard Stearman proved costly. His header back to goalkeeper Carl Ikeme was poor, and in his attempts to backtrack he managed to tug down the oncoming Jimmy Kebe, conceding a penalty which Gylfi Siggurdsson converted from the spot.

Sam Vokes was quick in making an effort to strike back from Miljas's cross but the force was with the Royals, Siggurdsson testing the keeper with a stinging drive from 25 yards out as play began to open out. Adiene Guedioura shot narrowly wide from a Miljas corner before Reading almost doubled their lead- Kebe's corner was headed out and Alex Pearce saw his header cleared at the second attempt, the half ending with a Karl Henry effort hooked wide.

The interval saw Mick McCarthy opt to make five changes, and his tactical alchemy almost paid off within minutes of play's resumption- Steven Fletcher and Matt Jarvis both profiting from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake crosses which proved a sore examination of Federici's capabilities, and a free kick followed after Andy Griffin had tripped Jarvis, who got up to take the set piece and teed up David Jones to cross for Fletcher, who headed over the bar.

Ikeme then faced a test of his own as youngster Jake Taylor examined him with an angled shot which was turned away. And following another flurry of changes by both sides, the hosts took the lead, Noel Hunt flicking the ball on for Michail Antonio to slam home at the far post. Jarvis was denied by a Taylor tackle at the other end  and it was only in the final ten minutes of play that they scambled home a consolation effort, Jarvis's free kick finding Jones who drilled a low strike beyond substitute Royals keeper Alex McCarthy.
