Good day, eh. - 3000 TFC fans expected to make the trip to Columbus Ohio for our season opener v. the Crew This is better support than clubs like Luton and Watford get from their travelling fans as I understand it, but then again, we have a superior product to offer, so you can't really blame them. - TFC coach John Carver has likened MLS to English Championship League - "the MLS is comparable to the Champions League in Britain, "or the top of League One, and improving. It's a decent standard. I think people in Europe under-estimate it. I would go on to say that if Toronto FC were playing in that league, we would be vying for a playoff spot quite easily, in my opinion - TFC are setting up the Toronto Football club academy, modelled after the English club system, according to John, "He wants to take the sport from the grassroots up and reshape it after the English model. Premier teams with reserve, youth and feeder clubs as young as nine." He goes on to add - " "That's why we're setting up the Toronto football club academy. We want to build a system like they've got in England where we take the best kids from nine to 16 years old and develop them. We'd like to work with the local clubs so that kids get training, and we get more developed players. That way they can move up from our youth teams, to the reserves and the (MLS) club." - Toronto FC will also be playing a mini tournament against two other Canadian sides, the Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps of the United Soccer Leagues, in order to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League. The tournament will involve clubs from the United States, Mexica and Central America. |
