Leaders lie in wait for improving Pompey

It's just under a year since Doncaster and Pompey played out a seven-goal thriller at the Keepmoat. Pompey won 4-3 that day but a week later they were relegated from the Championship, along, of course, with Rovers. That was Pompey's second successive win at Donny - making it three in a row is a different proposition, though.

Guy Whittingham's team head north this time to face a team who are top of the league and looking well set for a quick return to the second division. They lead League One by three points and start as hot favourites to chalk up a 21st league win of the season against the Blues.

Pompey, meanwhile, despite an improved run which saw them chalk up two wins and a draw before Tuesday's 1-0 defeat at Leyton Orient, go into the game eight points from safety - and that's without the ten-point deduction that may or may not be imposed in time to come off this season's tally.

Boss Whittingham took heart from the performance at Brisbane Road and said: 'It was probably the best 90-minute performance we've had for quite a while so that was very pleasing.

'The result didn't go the way it should have done with the performance we put in but having said that we had the opportunities to score goals and we didn't take them. We've got to make sure that if we do get those opportunities, which will be few and far between because Doncaster are a good side, we've got to make sure we score.

'Since we've been doing this we've said we go out to be competitive, we go out to win the games and that's no different at Doncaster.'

Whittingham has been able to field an unusually-settled side in recent games - a factor that has doubtless contributed to improved form - and he again looks likely to make few if any changes at the Keepmoat.

Sam Sodje and John Akinde are among those pishing for starts but are likely to have to remain on the bench - along with defender Adam Webster, who is celebrating a call-up to the England under-19 squad to face Turkey on Thursday.

One man who's been a key figure in recent successes is defender Gabor Gyepes, and he seems unfazed by the fact Pompey are facing the league leaders.

He told The News: 'We don’t care about them being at the top. We care about our football. We go there believing we can win and believing something can happen. When we go there we’ll give it our best and feel we can get a good result.

‘They are a good team and are leaders, but we don’t care about where we go at the moment. We know we are in good form and definitely have a chance to win the game. We have a good team now and we feel we have a chance against anyone. I’m really, really happy to be part of this team now. I’m proud to be part of this club.’

Pompey have lost at Doncaster only once in their history and if they can avoid adding to that single loss this weekend, it will be another big sign they have turned the corner.

Our prediction: Doncaster 1 Pompey 1
