My lad needs a little help with his sociology.

If you've got a couple of minutes could you please answer these 4 questions?

1, Tell me your views on the way the youth are portrayed in the media.

2, Do programmes such as 'Waterloo Road' and "Skins' influence the way you think young people behave, and why do you think this is?

3, Why do you believe the media plays a big part in people's lives.

4, Do you believe certain newspapers, when they say that every teenager or 'hoodie' is out to cause trouble and why?

Thanks

1. youth are mainly portrayed as drunks/druggies/hoodlums. why? partly because its true. society has chnaged since i were a kid and as im 29 thats not too long ago. but also partly because good news doesnt sell. papers wouldnt sell if the headline was kids behave. the papers want kids to be unruly coz then they can shout out 'scum kids misbehaving' or something like that

2. yes. kids watch them and IMHO they believe that skins and watreloo road are in some crazy way reality. that every kid in th UK is doing what is shown and so they its cool to copy.

3. because ulitmately unless you have the time and effort to read up on topics from all angles (which most people do not have the time), then the media (TV/paper/internet) at least gives you one angle on the news. unfortunaltly it maybe an angle that someone or thing eg the government are trying to get across so the influence the media can have id negative

4. no. i dont believe papers when they say that. mainly coz i teach 11-18yr olds and altho there are some right little shits who need a good kicking (and they are your typical hoodie wearing chavs), there are also some great kids who would never cause any problems and definately not cause trouble.

hope that helps

1. They report what sells newspapers but we now have a generation brought up on reality TV, gangsta rap wannabes and over paid footballers where having little or no talent can make you a millionaire. If you couple that with the lack of discipline because the PC brigade have seen fit to ban telling off people what do people expect?

2. No, they reflect the society we have nurtured, it's a sad indictment of our culture.

3. Always has, but when they portray nobodies as celebs and glorifies their actions then it is going to inspire the youth of today to follow.

4. No, thankfully I'd like to think I can form my own opinions and I I can see some good kids out there, but they are in an ever decreasing majority.

Tell him to check his Haralambos text book.

1. Like all social groups the representation of youths is fraught with problems. Generally they are divided into binary opposites however there does seem to be a fixation with creating moral panics. This in turn may be seen as a hypodermic model in terms of audiences beliefs, though once again the age of the audience will dictate the way the representation is mediated something the Frankfurt School neglected to take into account. This could result in what Festinger termed cognitive dissonance.

2. Many of the issues have been covered above. I think young people (I assume teenagers) might emulate certain aspects of these shows though mainly in an ironic fashion and most young people are aware that these are gross caricatures designed to entertain.

3. The media in all its guises (film, tv, music, print and internet) plays a role in your lives only up to a point. Returning to Festinger most people seek out representations which re-enforce their pre existing ideas. Similarly the uses and gratification theory covers other reasons for why people seek out media texts. Different people have different reasons for using the media.

4. No. I don't believe any paper would be so myopic but if they were to print such a headline it wouldn't sway my opinion as it is too simplistic and clearly flawed.

1. Absolutely accurately portrayed as thieving, gratuitously violent, drug soaked ruffians. Especially the immigrants.

2. No idea - never seen either of them.

3. Because people are too thick to learn to read and write.

4. Yes. Especially the Daily Mail - they surely have their finger totally on the pulse.

Hope this helps. Guaranteed a pass with distinction.
