Best 'LIVE' rock albums

Had a long car journey to make yesterday - pulled some CD's for the trip and revisited some classics.

Live albums can be measured by the original songs, musicianship to play them live, and capturing the essence, soul & personality of the band.

The Who 'Live at Leeds' definitely ticks all the boxes and could be considered best live album ever.

Deep Purple - Made in Japan (another contender for best ever)

Thin Lizzy - Live & Dangerous

Can speak from experience as I had the pleasure of seeing The Who, Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy all live in Leicester at Granby Halls & DeMont back in the 70's & 80's.

I was also at the Deep Purple gig. Saw Hendrix and Cream, and a good few others, but the best live performance was Free at Loughborough University.

El Vesto - you say best live performance ever seen was Free at Loughboro Uni.

I can believe it.... after 40 years of listening to rock, Free has to be my #1 favourite - but biggest regret is never seeing them live. Check out Free at Isle of White in 1970 on You Tube really capturing their musical genius and powerhouse live performance, with Paul Kosoff is all his pomp & majesty.

Free had it all, inc best front man of all time (in an era of Daltry, Steve Marriott, Ian Gillan and Plant)

I'm also fond of 'Rock n Roll Animal'. 'Lou Reed Live' was also recorded on the same night, it's a slightly different stereo mix, but it's all the same concert. It must have been some gig [^]

Wombat,
I'm with you as regards never seeing FREE live...my biggest musical regret too...by a mile.Got close to it few weeks ago at DeMont,Paul Rodgers was superb and the band he had with him did great justice to FREE'S music.
Anyway back to live albums...check out FREE LIVE and STATUS QUO LIVE IN GLASGOW.

I saw them at Reading when they stood in for a off his face Ozzy, they were fantastic, relaunched their careers as a out and out rock band, saw them twice after that, Demont and Donington, the Demont gig was a madhouse

I went to all four Little Feat concerts at the Rainbow when 'Waiting for Columbus' was made. Mon, Tues and Thurs were the band in fine form, six encores, genuine crowd rapture.

I don't know what happened to them on Wednesday, maybe Lowell George had done too much cocaine or dropped some acid or something. The line in 'Dixie Chicken' about 'yes, that guitar player sure could play' was delivered with some venom by the rest of the band. They did an appalling version of 'Willin' as an encore, and then xxxxed off.

'Waiting For Columbus' is all right, but I prefer one of the bootlegs, 'Electrif Lycanthrope', which is now available on Spotify.

Mali, that's very interesting. I did figure that something like that went on. Thursday night was probably the best gig - they'd probably had a band meeting in which the horn section from Tower Of Power said 'Well, if you're going to play like that again, then we're off' [^]
