May was pretty damn quick to announce a public inquiry. They all know you can't have both.

No it isn't.
For instance, if multi nationals like Apple were charged an extra VAT amount on their products which were traded in the UK to compensate for their blatantly engineered tax dodging (currently subject to a billion euro fine by the EU) that would be a start.
Then close the tax loopholes currently encouraged by government. Then a 'use it or lose it' policy on empty properties bought for investment but empty.
It's not a shortage of measures which is the problem but a reluctance to use them. People are finally waking up after years of stagnant or declining pay.
Anyway, your orthodox 'nothing can be done' approach isn't working very well is it?

Before money can be taxed it has to be earned, it is the minions that earn it. If the man at the top gets taxed more the minions below have to earn it. That can be done in many ways but it must come from somewhere.
Taking people's property off them because they're not using it the way you approve of sounds uncomfortably like communism to me

Trillions? Doubt it, and it's a one off grab, and will sort out not much - maybe the demolition of tower blocks or perhaps making them safer. Sustainable cashflow is the key and neither the magic money tree fairy or the Iron Bankers have the answer yet.

peatling -
The influential American Forbes finance magazine estimated in 2012 (the last figures available) that the amount hidden offshore was $13 to $20 trillion. It surely hasn't declined since. What amount is from the UK and how it was raised is not possible to say as it's secret, which is kind of the idea. But the UK being a major player in world finance must contribute a sizeable share.
These are figures from a leading capitalist source.
Declining pay? Most workers have seen their pay frozen or severely limited since the recession. This was to 'pay for the economic collapse'. 'All in it together' ring a bell? It was, we were told to last two years. It is now nine years.
As inflation has crept steadily upwards during that period, the real spending power has declined. Even had it remained on par it would have represented a standstill standard of living for the first time since the war.
I'm not in the business of advising a capitalist economy how to extricate itself from its difficulties but these measures have resulted in a flatlining high street now being maintained by increasing levels of personal and corporate debt levels (yesterday's Observer). This is a recipe for another slump.
My/our point behind all this is that the load is being carried by the least well off in society. This is not about 'not approving' someone's spending habits as fatuously suggested but social justice and an end to this crippling austerity which is clearly not working and getting the economy moving again.

Isn't this the whole point of the latter parts of this thread? The people at the bottom of the ladder have to create the wealth for those at the top to be taxed on it. Those at the bottom will always be in this position because there are millions of workers but very few CEOs. Do you have figures to show that wage inflation is below general inflation?

Agree with you Oadlad, but I fear your info is wasted to many on here. Re offshore holdings in trillions, a million seconds is 12 days, a billion 32 years and a trillion approx 32,000 years. American trillion calculation. The scale of wealth held by the 1% even in this country, thats about 1 million people, if properly taxed would go a long way to solving many current UK problems. It'll never happen tho' for reasons debated on this board many times, with unchangeable polar opposite views. Still we'll always have 2015/2016, and the odds are 32015/32016 aswell. Hussar !!!!

Properly taxed is correct, punitive tax just because someone or something is successful is wrong.
30% of 250K a year is a lot more than 30% of 25K a year - tax has to be reasonable to work.

Where we fall down as a country is in failing to stop tax avoidance which is legally right but morally wrong.

So what are you proposing, some kind of cash ceiling on the amount of tax someone should pay?

If someone is on 250k a year I'd hope they're paying more than 30%.

Hackney, I'm not saying that any specific amount is too much. What am trying to say is that it has to be seen to be fair by everyone. Most reasonable people understand that they must contribute more but when taxation gets too high people will find more way around it. People have to be rewarded for their skills (just ask Mahrez) if they feel penalised they will try to hide it which is Oadlad's point I think.

Oadlad, I don't to know why people would put their money offshore if not to evade the HMRC which is illegal.

The point, my point, is about hypocrisy and double standards.
On the one hand we are all in it together and we are expected to tolerate a reduced standard of living for the 'national good'
and we then read that the wealthy corporations and individuals can spirit their gains abroad to either havens or nations of their choice but that is 'good business sense' - an amount bigger than the economies of USA and Japan combined.
If it is illegal why is it not dealt with? If I killed someone the law would not rest until I was captured. If I contacted the R&C and said that I would be paying my tax into Holland (like Walkers Crisps) they would prevent me.
These double standards have gone on long enough.
And 'we' have voted for another four/five years of them. Tighten your belts everyone, it is going to get even worse..
PS Have I just seen the start of a new campaign of lies and hate for Jezza? they don't pause for breath do they?

OK, we're due another crash, historically every decade. I have no idea what the accident will be that triggers it, but its inevitable.

The USA are moving up interest rates, if ours follows suit the domino effect of mortgage defaults will see a massive housing crash.

The astute who see whats going to happen have prepped for it, and are poised to buy when the proverbial hits the fan.

So, if someone is astute, plans for the future, sacrifices, takes risk to achieve in your world I would be described as what ?
