A friend down in Rye advertised a 25-foot fishing boat for sale a couple of weeks ago. He sold it to some Romanians from Chatham for 5,000. When they turned up they had no trailer, they simply wanted to sail the boat back to Chatham. They had no experience of sailing and no navigation aids. Plus they were convinced that it was Essex or Suffolk that they were setting out from, not East Sussex.

My friend had considerable doubts as to whether he was going to sell it to them, but they had the money and he needed it. He settled for an hour in Rye Harbour giving them a crash course in piloting a fishing boat and said 'Keep the coast to your left, and for God's sake don't hit a ferry'

He was constantly on the phone to them until they were well past Dover (prime ferry-hitting territory) and gave up.

About three days later he got a phone call from them to say they'd only just got back. They had beached on the Goodwin Sands, predictably, and they had to wait until the tide turned. They said it was the time of their lives.

I am really not sure what to make of this, other than shake my head in disbelief.

I hate to come over all boring and responsible like - but isn't that rather akin to flogging your car to someone without a driving licence?

On the plus side it seems they made it and no-one died...

And if they ran out of food, they could always catch a fish, though I doubt very much if that comes under their areas of competence.

I would have said the same if it were English born-and-bred people who could trace their ancestry back to the Norman Conquest. It's just funnier with them being Romanians. Why, I don't know.

The Swiss immigrants would have bought a triple-decker yacht with the pound at its current level, and they would know how to operate it. Have you ever met a Swiss person who was in any way incompetent?

Fair play to the Romanians. They lived up to their national stereotype, and they survived. Like Jackie said, it was a fantastic adventure for them.

But they weren't Swiss. If he'd made the thread title "Swiss" he would have looked a bit silly.

Exactly my point. Romanians are the new Irish, always good for a laugh at their bumbling ways.
Actually, the 'sailors' in the story confounded this stereotype by getting the job done, albeit in a risky manner.
Anyway, there was this Romanian, Irishman and Somali down the pub and...

Bnet, serious question,
Where can I buy a decent pair of deck/boat shoes locally? Size 9 in brown.
Bought a nice pair from Russell & Bromley on Ryde High Street,IOW,about 25 years ago.
Would prefer British made not American!

From what I can remember, it was a pretty awful boat. There were soldiers at Dunkirk who said 'No thanks, I'll get the next one'

Romania makes good shoes according to the Guardian but Louis Vettone prefer to call them Italian.
