The long expected announcement came yesterday while my mind couldn't be further than thoughts of standing in a farmers field come June. Now 24 hours after digesting the news I feel it's time to have my tuppence worth. U2 are undoubtedly one if not the biggest band in the world, so what better for them to make an appearance at the biggest festival in the world?

Personally I feel the time for U2 to play Glastonbury has been and gone many years ago. Growing up in the 80's U2 were the rough Irish types who hogged our charts with blistering rock anthems. I wasn't particularly a fan of everything they did to be frank, but I did and still do acknowledge the genius behind such tracks as Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Years Day.

I believe some time in the mid 80's or even as late as 93 was the the time for U2 to grace the Pyramid stage. Back then U2 and Bono where still thought of as a rock band with a message to convey, where as now most people I know view them as some kind of UN ambassadors for rock and peace.

Every now and then I have a little listen to some U2 and some of the stuff will always stand the test of time. My U2 nostalgia ends with the 1993 masterpiece of alternative rock Zooropa. After 1993 I'm afraid to say that U2 have produced a load mediocre humbug with not one of the albums released since being able to hold a candle to the Joshua Tree.

As I mentioned previously, Bono and his bandmates seem to spend most of their time jetting the world supporting all manner of political and social causes. When people my age talk about U2 in conversation the phrase 'who the fuck does Bono think he is' is quite common. I'm not sure if Bono knows who he is any more if I'm honest, is he the lead singer of a ground breaking Irish band or is he the rock star equivalent of a Guardian reader?.

The Pyramid stage at Glastonbury is an unforgiving place and it has made and broke many an artist over the years. If U2 take the stage and perform the back catalogue of tracks that only true legends can rely on, then U2 at Glasto will be a massive success. However if they are intent on running through a few classics and then the newer material then I'm sorry to say it won't go down well with most of the punters.
