Hull ground out a win over moneybags Manchester City on Saturday afternoon to make it five points from their three home games in a week. The same eleven that started the draw with Chelsea in midweek was named as Phil Brown looked for continuity from the men in amber, and from the off the front pairing of Jozy Altidore and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink caused problems, Kolo Toure chopping down the American in the midst of one of his early runs then watching on as he picked himself up to take the resulting free kick and send an effort wide, minutes later again being taken down by youngster Diedrick Boyata as he led the Blues defence a merry dance. Vennegoor of Hesselink then had a good opportunity of his own just past the 20 minute mark as he met a Steven Mouyokolo flick on the volley but the attempt whistled wide before George Boateng’s shot met a similar fate after he had taken on Vennegoor of Hesselink’s downward header. Then on 31 minutes Altidore got the goal both he and his team deserved as he drove in a shot from 18 yards- the visitors finally mustering a shot on target to end the half as Wayne Bridge’s shot was smothered by Myhill in the home goal before Emmanuel Adebayor miscued from the rebound.

And in the early minutes of the second half a penalty could have been awarded to the Tigers as Altidore claimed for a spot kick but the appeal fell on deaf ears and the game was allowed to continue- the lead doubling on 54 minutes as Craig Fagan won a corner, Stephen Hunt taking it and Boateng returning a half hearted clearance with gusto- the shot beating Shay Given in the City goal before he could even attempt to make a move and prompting his team mates to send in the cavalry in a display of attacking intent not seen since the Charge of the Light Brigade as Adam Johnson came on for a debut in place of Stephen Ireland  and Carlos Tevez had his shot pushed behind , yielding a corner from which Adebayor netted a consolation strike . Patrick Viera then came on for Craig Bellamy and Amr Zaki replaced Altidore, his fresh legs almost making it a three goal advantage but for Given, who saved his low shot.  After a flurry of substitutions Johnson came close to narrowing the deficit following a Myhill slip up but the keeper recovered to save and spare his blushes at the expense of a corner which was cleared, Tevez attempting to test him further but his effort was easily saved as the game moved into four minutes of added time- the keeper again at his best to deny Adebayor and preserve three points.
