According to the Club's website three more players, King, Richards and Kuffour have been released.

Can't really argue against any of the three as far as I am concerned.

No real surprises as you say Bert.

I would like to have seen us keep Kingy on a pay as you play contract, but am guessing Hessy is still calling the shots at the moment and it was clear King had no future under Hess.

Kuffour has been disappointing since he got a contract. Bristol Rovers fans called that one right. Shame really, as he looked a class act when he was on loan.

Hope Richards finds another league club once he recovers. Solid pro who probably belongs in this league.

I thought he'd keep either King (on a short term rolling contract) or Richards.

Hopefully Essam will get a good 3 year contract and Davies 2 years.

Yep, don't disagree with letting those 3 go. It's a real shame about King, but he's never going to be properly fit again. At least the new manager has space to bring in players he wants.

Very disappointed about King, was hoping he would be kept as left-footed competition for Frampton.

Maybe he was on ridiculous money- who knows.

Feel for Richards, must be tough getting released whilst injured. What will happen with his rehab programme now?

Sad about King, my favourite player of recent years, I understand why he has been released though. As much as I wanted him to be he just wasn't the same and never looked comfortable, hope he can get another deal somewhere else in the league or Conference.

Kuffour, not bothered about him really. Sometimes I thought Richards could be a really good defender, him and King complimented each other well at one stage but his distribution was so erratic if it was further than 10 yards that he turned so into a team of hoofers almost all on his own at times! Think he will get another L2 club.

A lot of decisions on players seem to be being made without the new managers opinion being taken on board, which I'm a bit surprised about but then we don't know how many of the players are being released for financial reasons..its turning into quite a culling though.

Bye Kingy, fate dealt you a crappy hand.

Tough for King and Richards who have been good servants to the club, never shirked responsibility even when having bad games. It's a shame that injuries beyond their control have put them without a club. It's different to people like Weston who could easily have had another contract if he'd given a little sweat for the club.

Kuffour falls into that category I'm afraid. No doubting his talent, but just didn't seem to justify what are undoubtedly large wages.

Edit - In reply to Hastgill, we don't know that there isn't someone in place, perhaps waiting for the end of a contract who hasn't said who he wants?

I think having Holt in his pocket and Holt's career since shows what might have been for King but for that awful injury.

Gutted to see King go, but like others have said it's perhaps understandable.

Brilliant defender but ravaged by injuries that have effectively all but destroyed his real prospects of playing at a higher level than he did with us.

Good luck to him, and I'd love to welcome him back (even as an opposing player) to Priestfield one day.

Richards gave his all, but was limited in his ability. Too much of a hoofer - even for L2.

Kuffour on his day looked excellent, but in the latter part of the season didn't do enough to warrant a new deal on what he was apparently being paid.

I don't suppose that theres anything to stop the new manager re-signing them if he wanted do, unless they find a new club in the meantime. I think, anyway that players out of contract have to be released or offered a new contract by the end of this month.

Gills 365 lot on Twitter are suggesting King found out about his release through the social network site.

If true, really poor form from the club. Probably the most likely of the releases, but a face to face is the least he deserved.

If true that's an atrocious way to treat our longest serving player who has been nothing but professional and digified since he joined, especially in the face of horrendous injuries.

Best of luck for the future Kingy.

That's really shoddy. Anyone released from a contract in any walk of life at least deserves to be told personally before the news is shared with anyone else.

King finding out on twitter is fcking disgraceful and the club should be ashamed of themselves, fcking classless. Very sad to see King leave, if that injury didn't happen there's no doubt he would be playing in the Championship now at least. Good luck to him and Richards.

Regarding Kuffour

Report Message | Email Message To A Friend | Reply To Message

I may be statistically wrong, but I think his best period was when Tomlin was fit and in the team with him.

His release does not surprise me one bit. It was a short-term deal that was meant to be part of a kick-start to promotion. I would think that players signed on that basis are released 9 times out of 10 if the club does not achieve promotion/stave off relegation as their signing is usually a financial gamble.

I think we realise now the financial gulf between leagues one and two. This might wear off if all the traditionally bigger clubs return to the Championship. However with 3 from Portsmouth, Coventry and Sheffield United or Huddersfield to be there again next season the gaps shows no real sign of shrinking.

I was not shocked at all by the latest departures. But the way it was done was clearly wrong.I think the new man has already been lined up and clearly wants to freshen up in all areas. Not just two or three players as Scally had hinted a few days ago.I think this move seems to point to a new manager who is currently working else where but has been allowed to speak to us.These departures are in affect his first move. But I am sure it wasn't the way he wanted it done though.

I've heard (might even have been on this board) that the timing is due to the requirement for clubs to provide their 'retained list' in the next few days, but yes it's feasible that the preferred new manager has been consulted on certain players even if he's not yet in post.

Interesting that King says in his interview with KSN that he had began discussing a pay-as-you-play deal with Scally and Hess, so this was something of a shock. Suggests that perhaps someone else has made the call. On the other hand, King also says that he hasn't given up hope on whoever comes in offering him a year-long contract. Can't see it happening myself but who knows.

Agree of course that how it has been handled is appalling.

It really shouldn't surprise you about King's lack of notification. You know Scurrilous doesn't have too much in the way of social grace and we were complaining last season about a seeming lack of man management skill from the then manager.
