John Carew went some way to silencing his critics as he played a pivotal role in Villa’s 5-1 hammering of Bolton.

Carew set up three and scored one himself as Martin O’Neill’s team found some home comfort after recent poor results on the road. The victory left Villa fifth – and ust one point behind fourth-placed Spurs.

John Carew produced an inspired performance as Aston Villa demolished Bolton to put their push for another European spot back on course.

The Norwegian international set up goals for Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor and James Milner and scored one himself before Carlos Cuellar put the icing on the cake.

Bolton could only manage a single reply from substitute Johan Elmander.

The home side went ahead after five minutes when Young netted after goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen had parried Carew's effort.

Villa doubled their lead after 43 minutes. Cahill tried to shepherd the ball out for a goal-kick but Carew raced past him and cut the ball back to Agbonlahor, who took the chance.

It was against the run of play when Elmander reduced the arrears in the 45th minute after what appeared to be a harsh free-kick awarded against Agbonlahor. Cahill got well forward and struck the post with his shot but Elmander was on hand to bundle the rebound over the line.

Carew got on the scoresheet after 53 minutes to re-establish Villa's two-goal advantage, clipping into the corner of the net and after 72 minutes Milner made it 4-1 after Carew had been pulled back in the penalty area by Davies. Milner saw his spot-kick saved but was on hand to force the rebound home.

Three minutes later Villa completed their nap hand when Carlos Cuellar headed home from Milner's centre.
